development

The HC-3 was the last of a series of helicopters developed in the ČSR in the 1950s. The construction work began towards the end and were under the direction of Jaroslav Šlechta. The model was larger and heavier than its predecessor, made of all-metal construction and was intended to perform various tasks. In addition to the transport of freight and passengers, an agricultural version for applying pesticides and a rescue version equipped with two stretchers were planned . In military use in the army , the HC-3 should perform reconnaissance , liaison and also medical tasks.

On May 16, 1960, the first prototype with the aircraft registration OK-15 completed its maiden flight. In the following year two more HC-3s ( OK – 16 and OK – 17 ) were completed and included in the ongoing test program, which produced good results. The third prototype received a more powerful Soviet AI-14 engine in 1962 and was tested as the HC-3A .

Despite the satisfactory results, the model was not put into series production because the Council for Mutual Economic Aid had meanwhile made the decision to no longer have helicopter developments carried out in Czechoslovakia. The supply of the Comecon member states with smaller rotary wing aircraft was instead taken over by the neighboring country Poland, where the license version of the Soviet Mi-1 had been produced since 1957 and the construction of its successor Mi-2 was already planned. Thus, a further development called HC-103 with an even stronger drive did not get beyond the project stage.
