Vacanti mouse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vacanti mouse was a laboratory mouse ( SCID ) that was used as a bioreactor to grow cartilage tissue in the shape of a human auricle . The chondrocytes (cartilage cells) came from cattle and were sown in a form whose shape is modeled on a human ear and which is degradable. This was then implanted under the skin of the nude mouse .

The "ear mouse"

The "ear mouse" was created by pioneers of tissue engineering (Engl. Tissue engineering ), the brothers Charles and Joseph Vacanti and their team of Boston and Cambridge in the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Massachusetts Medical School grown. The results of the experiment were published in 1997.

controversy

The photo of the Vacanti mouse was circulated in the press and on the Internet; often by email without much text. Therefore, it was unclear to many whether the photo was real or a hoax . In the late 1990s, the photo was used as a symbol in protest against genetic engineering (although no transgenic organisms were produced here).
