Vacanz

Vacanz is the name of a sculpture in Magdeburg's old town .

The sculpture is in the southern part of the city center on Magdeburg's Friedensplatz, on the western side of the Breite Weg .

The work was created by Irmtraud Ohme and erected in its current location in 2002. Vacanz is four meters high and is made of steel, some with white acrylic paint . Two large tubular steel shapes, angled towards one another, rise from a base clad in black granite . At the top ends there is a smaller spiral shape. With sculpture, the artist combines her two main fields of work, metal sculpture and jewelry design. The large white shapes may be reminiscent of a breaking frame or staples. The smaller spirals look like creoles or snap rings .

The tilted position of the forms represents an unstable state. At the same time, the center of the work is left open and thus vacant . It should give the viewer space to define this center themselves. However, the work is primarily to be understood as an aesthetic object that opens up possibilities for associations.
