Vagn Häger Poulsen (born August 25, 1909 in Copenhagen , Kingdom of Denmark , † July 12, 1970 in Copenhagen) was a Danish classical archaeologist and museum director.

Life

After visiting the Copenhagen metropolitan cities , Poulsen went to study art history at the University of Copenhagen in 1927 . Two years later he switched to Classical Archeology and completed his studies in 1934 with the master's degree . He received his doctorate in 1937 with the work The strict style. Studies on the history of Greek sculpture 480 to 450 , which was published in the same year in German with a resumé in Danish in Copenhagen. As a student, Poulsen took part in the excavation campaigns of the Hama expeditions in Syria in 1931 and 1932, which were supported by the Danish Ny Carlsbergfondet from 1931 to 1938 .

From 1933 to 1943 Poulsen was secretary of the Ny Carlsbergfondet. In the years before and after the Second World War , he went on study trips to Turkey, Greece and Italy. He began his work at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in 1936 as an inspector and curator and was director of the museum until his death in 1943. In the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek he arranged for the large objects to be re-arranged after 1945, and exhibitions were arranged in the study collections for smaller and less well-known works. He opened the museum to the general public through lectures, guided tours and concerts.

Poulsen published works on art historical topics as well as on the results of the Hama expedition and on topics of Greek and Roman art. In the series The Blue Books of publishing Langewiesche he gave in the years 1962 to 1969 a complete overview of the art of antiquity.
