The Lac Vaihiria is a mountain lake in the center of the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia .

geography

The lake is about 600  m in the center of the island in the area of Mont Tetufera and Teraiatupo . The lake is fed by small mountain streams and drains to the south with a stream that flows into the Pacific at Mataiea on the south coast . Since the 1980s it has been used to generate water and electricity, which means that its water level is subject to considerable fluctuations. The freshwater moss Plumatella vaihiriae is named after the lake. There is also a legend about the native eels (Fa'aravai a nu'u, anguille royale).
