The Valencian Museum of Ethnology ( Museu Valencià d'Etnologia ) was founded in 1982 and opened to the public in 1983. Its goals are the research and dissemination of knowledge in the field of ethnology and anthropology by creating a space for knowledge and reflection with regard to two complementary areas of the cultural diversity that characterizes people :

  • On the one hand, the peculiar Valencian , which is based on the cultural patterns of traditional Valencian society and its transition to industrial society , without neglecting the new cultural forms of the present .
  • On the other hand, the general range of all cultures, from those of the Mediterranean that surrounds the country of València to those of more distant regions of the world.

This center is administered by the Diputació de València and is located in the Center Cultural la Beneficència (Cultural Center la Beneficència) in the city of València .

activities

The museum houses three permanent exhibitions : La ciutat viscuda. Ciutats valencianes en trànsit 1800–1940 (The lived city . Valencian cities in transition 1800–1940), Horta i marjal ( kitchen garden and bog ) and Secà i muntanya ( dry field cultivation land and mountains ), each of the urban spaces, the kitchen gardens and bogs, and treat the arid and mountain landscapes of the Valencian territory. In addition, traveling and temporary exhibitions and didactic workshops are organized. The museum also carries out research that is carried out in various projects and the call for the Bernat Capó Prize for the dissemination of popular culture . The museum also publishes a number of periodicals: Revista valenciana d'etnologia , the BETNO newsletter and the collections of Temes d'etnografia valenciana and Ethnos . It has a library specializing in ethnology and anthropology, as well as a documentation center. The museum's facilities extend to the old Bétera psychiatric hospital , where a collection of around 10,000 items is stored and cataloged.
