Constitutional referendum in Kenya in 2005

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2005 constitutional referendum in Kenya was held on November 21, 2005. The proposed new constitution was rejected with 58 percent of the vote.

procedure

In the referendum, the government was divided. Kibaki's NAK faction, which mainly comprised politicians from the peoples of the central highlands, campaigned for the government's draft. The government's LDP faction joined forces with KANU to vote against it. The symbols banana (pro) and orange (contra) were assigned to the two options.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) won the vote with 58% of the vote. This was widely viewed as a vote on Kibaki's policies.

The president responded by dismissing all ministers and forming a government of national unity. It now consisted of politicians from the NAK direction, regional politicians of various stripes and those representatives from KANU and FORD who were willing to work together.
