General election in Kenya in 1969

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Kenya in 1969 were restricted elections in which the ruling party had pre-selected the candidates. They were held in Kenya on December 6, 1969 . The elections marked the final transition in Kenya to a one-party state . The 158 members of the Kenyan National Assembly , who were elected through the free and fair parliamentary elections in Kenya in 1963 , had already passed their five-year term by one year at the time of the elections.

Course of the elections

In the run-up to the elections, incumbent President Jomo Kenyatta banned the left-wing Kenya African People's Union (KAPU) on October 30, 1969 on the grounds that it was "subversive". On November 7th, he dissolved the National Assembly and shortly thereafter announced new elections for December 6th. 600 candidates, all of whom were members of Kenyatta's own party, the Kenya African National Union (KANU), were allowed to run for elections on November 26th after they swore an oath of loyalty, which included a commitment to pay 50 pounds (meaning the Kenya- Schilling ) to be paid to the party fund, which should be repaid if the candidate is successful. With a turnout of 44.6%, 157 men and one woman were chosen from this selection. Between 2 and 10 candidates competed against each other in the individual constituencies. 77 members of the old people's assembly who ran for election were not re-elected, 50 members of the old assembly again received the approval of the voters. 108 candidates won a mandate in the National Assembly for the first time.
