Kenya presidential election in 1992

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1992 Kenyan presidential election took place on December 29, 1992 and was the first direct election of a President of Kenya . The previous presidents of the country were each determined by the Kenyan National Assembly . The election coincided with the Kenyan parliamentary elections in 1992 and was overshadowed by allegations of electoral fraud and targeted ethnic violence in the Rift Valley province . Human Rights Watch accused various prominent Kenyan politicians, including President Daniel Arap Moi and Deputy Prime Minister George Saitoti , of causing and organizing the violence. Seven candidates competed against each other, the winner of the election was Daniel Arap Moi, who had ruled Kenya for 14 years at the time.
