George Saitoti (born August 3, 1945 , † June 10, 2012 in Kibiku, Ngong , near Nairobi ) was a Kenyan mathematician and politician .

Life

Saitoti went to Mangu High and studied and received his doctorate in mathematics from Brandeis University in Waltham , east of the US state of Massachusetts , at the University of Sussex in Falmer in East Sussex , UK and at the University of Warwick in Coventry , UK . From 1972 he taught at the University of Nairobi and was professor and dean of the mathematics department of the University of Nairobi. He was the founder of the African Mathematical Union (AMU) and its vice-president from 1976 to 1979. He studied economics at the Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) in Weston , Massachusetts.

He became Minister of Finance in the government of President Daniel Arap Moi in 1983 , and Vice President in 1989. In the early 1990s he was involved in the Goldenberg scandal . In 1992 he became Minister for Planning and National Development , in 2001/02 he was Minister of State, after the 2002 elections he became Minister for Education, Science and Technology in the “National Alliance” of Mwai Kibaki .

In 1990/91 he was Executive Chairman of the International Monetary Fund IMF and the World Bank . In 1999/2000 he was President of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States .

George Saitoti was Minister of Homeland Security in Mwai Kibaki's government . He was considered a candidate for the next presidential election.

In the Kibaki government he was known as an opponent and critic of the radical Islamist Al-Shabaab militia in neighboring Somalia . The Kenyan government has been taking action against the militias with its own troops since attacks were carried out in Kenya. He visited the combat areas regularly and was killed in a helicopter crash along with his deputy, Joshua Orwa Ojode , and four other occupants of the helicopter.
