Sir Henry Bellingham (born March 29, 1955 in Cheltenham ) is a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and member of the House of Commons .

Life

Bellingham graduated from Magdalene College , University of Cambridge with a law degree in 1977. After that he was barrister from 1978 to 1984 after his admission to Middle Temple . He currently runs a business consultancy firm and lives in Kings Lynn .

He has been married since 1993 and has one child.

Bellingham is a descendant of John Bellingham , the assassin who murdered Prime Minister Spencer Perceval . He met a descendant of the one who ran as an opponent for the referendum party in the course of the 1997 election.

politics

Bellingham was in 1983 in the constituency North West Norfolk elected deputy in the upper house. There he represented this constituency until 1997 and was re-elected on June 7, 2001 for North West Norfolk as a member of parliament. In the 2005 general election , Bellingham was confirmed as a member of parliament with 50.3% of the vote in his constituency.

He made a name for himself in defense , economic and agricultural policy . He is also considered a specialist on the Northern Ireland issue .

Bellingham was in Parliament from 1991 to 1997 "Parliamentary Private Secretary" to Malcolm Rifkind . He was named for the Conservative Shadow Ministry of Economy and Trade in 2002. In May 2005 he became the “ whip ” of his group and in November 2006 shadow minister for constitutional affairs. Since June 2007 he has been shadow minister for justice.

At the 2016 New Year ceremony, Bellingham was knighted (Sir) by Queen Elizabeth II .

Bellingham is applying as speaker to succeed John Bercow in this position from November 2019. If elected, he advocated reintroducing the use of robes and wigs .
