Parliamentary elections in Kenya 1974

The 1974 parliamentary elections in Kenya were restricted elections under one -party rule and were held on October 14, 1974 in Kenya . The ruling party, Kenya African National Union, was the only party allowed in these elections. 740 members of KANU competed for 158 seats in the Kenyan National Assembly . The turnout was 56.5%. 88 previous holders of parliamentary seats, including four ministers, were not re-elected. President Jomo Kenyatta appointed 12 parliamentarians again after the election.

Selection of candidates and electoral process

The candidates were more than 700 in internal party primaries ( Primaries determined) in the 158 electoral districts of the country by a simple majority. The prerequisite was that the candidates had a command of English to such an extent that they would be able to participate in the debates of the National Assembly; convicted criminals above a certain sentence, bankrupts, but also civil servants were excluded . The voting was secret, ballot papers were thrown in closed ballot boxes. Four out of 16 female candidates were elected.
