Valentino Siani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valentino Siani (* 1595 ; † 1672 in Florence ) was an Italian violin maker and lived in Florence from around 1620 until his death.

The type and design of the Siani instruments are reminiscent of the work of Giovanni Paolo Maggini from Brescia (1581–1632). The assumption that Siani worked for Maggini is obvious and is supported by a tax register of the city archive in Florence from 1621. There the violin and viola maker Valentino Siani from Brescia is mentioned as a taxable citizen of the city of Florence.

Siani is particularly known for his violas, the tone of which was judged to be very good by Walter Hamma in his standard work Master of Italian Violin Making . Valentino Siani's instruments are extremely rare. They typically have a high bulge that ends in a well-crafted groove. What is striking is the narrow inlay chip and the particularly idiosyncratic snail.

A viola by Valentino Siani is shown at Walter Hamma's masterpiece of Italian violin making .
