Valentinus (usurper)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valentinus († 368 ) was a Roman usurper against Emperor Valentinian I.

The Pannonian Valentinus was sentenced to death in 368 for a (not recorded) crime, but at the request of his brother-in-law Maximinus, he was pardoned by the Emperor Valentinian and exiled to Britain . There Valentinus gathered other exiles around him and instigated a conspiracy, which was also joined by local troop leaders. The emperor sent his magister equitum Theodosius , who put down the rebellion as part of a larger-scale campaign against insurgent Picts , Scots and Saxons . Valentinus and his followers were given to the new Dux Britanniarum Dulcitius and executed.
