Valerian von Schoeffer

Valerian of Schoeffer ( Russian Валериан Александрович Шеффер ; born October 9, jul. / 21st October  1862 greg. In Kiev , † April 18 jul. / 1. May  1900 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian historian .

Valerian von Schoeffer, the son of the physiology professor Alexander von Schoeffer , studied classical philology and history at the universities of Kiev and Dorpat (1884–1886) . From 1886 to 1889 he studied at the Berlin University , where he particularly followed the philologist and archaeologist Carl Robert and the historian and epigraphist Ulrich Köhler . In 1889 he was with the dissertation insulae De rebus Deli Dr. phil. PhD.

After completing his doctorate, Schoeffer went to Moscow University , where he acquired the venia legendi in Classical Philology. In 1891 he repeated his doctorate and was then on June 28, 1892 associate professor of classical philology and director of the seminar for classical philology. On February 3, 1897 he was appointed full professor. He died after a brief illness on May 1, 1900.

Schoeffer's research focused on Greek chronology, constitution and state administration. His dissertation in Berlin was already highly praised by experts. He wrote numerous articles for the Realencyclopedia of classical antiquity , among other things on the archonate , the position of the basileus , the demen order and democracy.
