Valerius Gratus

Valerius Gratus was the fourth Roman prefect in Judea . His tenure lasted eleven years, from 15 to 26 AD. He was the successor to Annius Rufus and was replaced by Pontius Pilate .

One of his most famous decisions as Prefect of Judea was the recall of three Jewish high priests from the Temple of Jerusalem . In 18 AD he appointed Josephus Caiaphas (also called Kajafas or Kajaphas) for this position .
