history

Vallard Atlas (1547) east coast of Australia

It is one of the most famous atlases of the 16th century, an example of the so-called Cartographic School of Dieppe.

The authorship of Nicolas Vallard has been questioned and it is believed that he was only the first owner of the work, the authorship of which belongs to an unknown Portuguese cartographer.

This atlas shows the east coast of Australia for the first time, curiously 200 years before it was discovered by Captain James Cook , whereby this atlas could prove that the attribution of the discovery of the east coast of Australia to James Cook is an error.

The original atlas has been in the Huntington Library in San Marino (California) in the USA since 1924 .

description

The atlas consists of 68 pages, including a calendar and 15 nautical charts with splendid illustrations and extensive maritime information. It contains illustrations about the original population of the New World and is therefore an important testimony from the Age of Colonization.

The original atlas was bound in red leather with gold ornaments in 1805.

A curiosity of this work lies in the fact that the maps are oriented differently from today's maps, that is, the north is at the bottom of the map, while the south can be seen at the top.
