Palitzsch is an impact crater to the east of the lunar front side , which is located directly on the southeastern edge of the large Petavius crater . The crater is badly eroded and the inside is uneven.
North of the crater starts the moon valley Vallis Palitzsch , the north along the wall of Petavius to craters Petavius D passes.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Johann Georg Palitzsch .
