Valter Longo

Valter Longo (born October 9, 1967 in Genoa , Italy) is an Italian-American gerontologist .

biography

Longo grew up in Liguria and Calabria and immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 to become a rock guitarist. He first studied biochemistry at the University of North Texas. In 1992 he joined the laboratory of calorie restriction pioneer Roy Walford at UCLA , where he conducted research on the aging of the immune system and calorie restriction. With a thesis on antioxidant enzymes and anti-aging genes, he received his PhD from UCLA in 1997 .

Research and Teaching

Longo is Professor of Gerontology and Life Sciences and Director of the Institute of Longevity of the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Also director of the oncology research laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM) of the Italian Cancer Research Foundation. He does research specifically in the field of calorie restriction and fasting . Valter Longo developed the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), also called the dummy fasting diet , with which the benefits of therapeutic fasting can be integrated into everyday life. Longo is the author of the book "Eat You Young", in which he describes the Longevità diet and the FMD.
