Van Steenberge brewery

Van Steenberge is a Belgian brewery based in the East Flanders municipality of Evergem ; it is located there in the district of Ertvelde.

history

The brewery was founded by Jean Baptise De Bruin in 1784 under the name De Peer . After his death, his widow Angelina Petronella Schelfaut continued the brewing business. Her cousin and long-time assistant Jozef Schelfaut took over the brewery after her death. His daughter Margriet married the politician and professor of microbiology at the brewery school in Ghent , Paul Van Steenberg, who continued the family business after the First World War. Van Steenberge renamed the brewery Bios in 1919 , modernized the brewing equipment and expanded the range of beer to include different types and brands, such as Bios Flemish Bourgogne and Leutebock . After his death in 1962, his son Jozef Van Steenberge continued the business under the current company name. He brought the Augustijn beers onto the market from 1978 ; other brands and types, such as the strong beers Piraat and Gulden Draak , were added later. In 1990 the family brewery passed to his son Paul Van Steenberge, who modernized the brewing and bottling process using the latest technology. In 1998, Jef Versele, a cousin of Paul Van Steenberge, joined the family business in the seventh generation, which is now jointly managed by these two.
