Vanillin

The vanillin-HCl staining is a histological technique for coloring tannins with a vanillin - hydrochloric acid solution.

properties

The vanillin HCl staining solution consists of ten percent vanillin in an ethanol hydrochloric acid solution. Tannins are colored orange-red in the vanillin-HCl coloring. In this way, among other things, the localization of the phlorotannins can be determined. Proanthocyanidins or catechins are colored red with the vanillin HCl stain.

A variant of the vanilla coloring (vanillin with sulfuric acid ) is used in thin layer chromatography to detect unsaturated lipids .
