Wofsi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wofsi is a man from the Naftali tribe in the Old Testament . It is only mentioned in Num 13.14  EU .

etymology

The origin of the name is unclear. In the Masoretic text the name is וָפְסִי wåfsî . The Septuagint gives the name Ιαβι Iabi differently . The Vulgate follows the Hebrew text and translates Vaphsi . Martin Noth assumed Persian origin for the name , which would have spoken for a younger age of the name and the whole list Num 13.4–15  EU , but Horst Seebass considers this to be impossible, especially since he believes a text error is likely.

Biblical narration

In Num 14  EU , Moses is assigned by YHWH to send out spies to explore the land of Canaan , one from each tribe. Nachbi , the son of Wofsi , is sent for the Naftali tribe .
