When Varmalækjarmúli is a volcanic mountain in the west of Iceland .

Surname

Its name means promontory of the warm brook.

location

The elongated mountain is located about 30 km northeast of Borgarnes in West Iceland and reaches a height of 357 m. It rises between the high valley Flókadalur in the north and the Lundarreykjadalur in the south.

geology

The rock layers of the mountain are older than 3.1 million years and thus come from the Tertiary .

The mountain is quite rocky at the top and in the hinterland goes north into the high plateaus below the Ok .

Role as a saga setting

The mountain and above all the Varmilækur farm at its foot, which is still large today, play a role in the Njáls saga . The wife of the saga hero Gunnar von Hlíðarendi, Hallgerður Höskuldsdóttir, spends the years of their first, unhappy marriage here.

Hiking on Varmalækjarmúli

You can easily climb the mountain from the southwest side (partially marked hiking trail). On the front summit there is the possibility of entering yourself in a summit book.
