Vasant "Vas" Narasimhan (* 1976 ) is an American manager . He has been Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG since February 1, 2018 .

Narasimhan is the son of Kalathur Narasimhan and his wife Gita, a nuclear technician . Kalathur Narasimhan was Vice President Research and Development at Hoeganaes Corporation (originally the US division of Höganäs ). Vasant Narasimhan lives in Basel and has been married to Srishti Gupta since 2003. The couple have two children.

Life

After a bachelor's degree in life sciences from the University of Chicago , Narasimhan earned a master's degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School . He then studied medicine at Harvard Medical School . He completed his studies with an MD . Prior to joining Novartis in 2005, Narasimhan worked for McKinsey & Company .

On February 1, 2016, Narasimhan became Chief Medical Officer and Global Head of Drug Development . He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Novartis Foundation since January 2017. On September 4, 2017, the company announced that Narasimhan would become CEO and successor to Joseph Jimenez on February 1, 2018 .

Narasimhan is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine .
