The Vasco Sports Club is a football club from Vasco da Gama , the largest city in the West Indian state of Goa with around 100,000 inhabitants . The club, founded in 1951 as Clube de Desportos de Vasco da Gama , rose to the top division of India, the I-League 1st Division , for the second time at the end of the 2007/08 season ,
The club owns the Tilak Maidan Stadium, which holds around 15,000 spectators. It was later expanded to include a clubhouse. However, Vasco SC plays league games in the 35,000-seat Fatorda Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium in the neighboring town of Margao , where local rivals Sporting Clube de Goa , a branch of the Portuguese Sporting Clube de Portugal , better known in Germany as Sporting Lisbon, also play.
history
The club's most successful period was in the 50s and 60s, with various cup wins and the six-time championship of Goa, which was still a Portuguese colony at that time .
In 1998 the club qualified for the Goa Professional League and rose to the first division for the first time at the end of the 1999/00 season. Vasco stayed there for five years before relegating again. A 3rd place in 2003 and 2004 were the best placements. After the resurgence in 2007/08, the 1st league could not be held and they rose as bottom of the table with 19 points from 22 games again.
