Vasco da Gama (short: Vasco or Vasku ) is a city in the Indian state of Goa .

The place belongs to the Municipal Council Mormugao , one of the largest cities in Goa with about 100,000 inhabitants (2011) and an important seaport .

The place is located at the western end of the Mormugão Peninsula at the mouth of the Zuari River , about 30 km from the state capital Panaji .

The city was founded in 1543 and was Portuguese territory until it was annexed by India in 1961. The name comes from the Portuguese explorer and navigator Vasco da Gama .

The place has a connection to the rail ( South Central Railway ), road ( National Highway NH 17A), ship (Mormugoa Harbor) and air ( Dabolim Airport ).
