Vasilios Xydas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vasilios Xydas ( Greek Βασίλειος Ξυδάς , * 1877 in Athens ; † unknown) was a Greek athlete who was active in the late 19th century. Together with his compatriots Evangelos Damascos and Ioannis Theodoropoulos and the two Americans William Hoyt and Albert Tyler, he formed the field of only five participants in the pole vault at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 .

Xydas jumped over the starting height of 2.40 m and came in fifth and last place, while Damascos and Theodoropoulos still mastered the 2.60 m laid out as the third height and shared third place. However, like Xydas, they remained without a medal, as in Athens and four years later in Paris only the first two (Hoyt won with 3.30 m before Tyler with 3.20 m) were awarded.

Further services by Vasilios Xydas are not documented.
