Legend

Vasa Čokrljan from Paraćin in Serbia was considered an incorrigible bachelor and was the subject of many roundtables of his time. In 1908, at the age of 41, to everyone's surprise, he decided to get married after all. He married Jelena, who would later claim to have found the best and gentlest husband in the whole world in Vasa. Their daughter Ružica passed on the story of how the Vasa cake is said to have been made.

Vasa was therefore overjoyed when he was informed that his wife Jelena was expecting a child. But the joy did not last long, as her family doctor said that the unborn child was too big for the gentle figure of his wife and that there would be complications. He advised them to go to a well-known hospital in Belgrade when their child was born . Scared for his wife, Vasa decided not to spare no expense and to travel to Vienna with her .

It turned out that he did the right thing, the complications were greater than first thought. But the best gynecologist in Vienna was able to save mother and child and thus ensured a happy birth. Back home, Vasa's mother-in-law gave a rich feast as thanks that everything went well and that her daughter and granddaughter were doing well. She surprised her son-in-law with a new cake creation, which was named after him as the Vasa cake and has since been one of the most popular cakes in Serbia.

Curiosities

The originally Serbian Vasina cake is not only prepared in Serbia, but also in the other countries of the former Yugoslavia, such as Macedonia and Croatia. The Vasina cake is part of the main program (together with the Russian salad ) for birthdays and other festivities in neighboring Macedonia.
