Vatnafjöll are a volcanic mountain range in Iceland . Its highest peak reaches 1235 m.
location
They are located southeast of the Hekla volcano in the south of the country.
Volcanism
The Vatnafjöll consist of a group of volcanic crevices and rows of craters that begin directly southeast of the Hekla.
It is a volcanic system 40 km long and 9 km wide, which is normally included in the Hekla. In the summer of 2010 a project of the Volcanological Institute of the University of Iceland is up to date, which aims to clarify the exact relationship between the basalt- producing volcanic fissures in their area and Hekla.
In the Holocene there were around twelve eruptions from this system, the last one being 1200 years ago.
The 1987 earthquake
In 1987, the epicenter of an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale was below the Vatnafjöll .
