VdS loss prevention
The VdS GmbH is Europe's largest institute for corporate security and a 100% subsidiary of the General Association of German Insurers (GDV). VdS offers services with a focus on fire protection, security, cyber security, data protection, natural hazards, organization and education and publishes guidelines for security techniques that form the basis of EN standards. The institute employs around 500 people at the company's headquarters in Cologne and in the external offices of the technical test centers in Germany, in other European countries and in the Shanghai branch.

The company is divided into the areas of fire protection, security ( burglary protection ), cyber security ( information security ), natural hazards, management systems / risk management and an education center.
Accreditation
The company is accredited by the German Accreditation Service (DAkkS) for various tests and certifications according to DIN, ISO and EN standards, for example according to the European standard 45,000. VdS Schadenverhütung is a member of the European Fire and Security Group (EFSG).
history
At the beginning of the 20th century, the then innovative technology of automatic sprinkler systems also began to establish itself in German industry. In order to be able to assess the reliability of these fire protection systems, the German insurance industry founded the sprinkler monitoring center in 1908 . During the time of National Socialism , the Association of Private Fire Insurers and the Association of Public Fire Insurers were dissolved, while the sprinkler test center was largely able to continue its work until 1944. After an interruption due to the war, it was possible to resume operations in 1947. In June 1948 the test center was incorporated into the newly founded Verband der Sachversicherer e. V. (VdS) integrated.
In the years that followed, the VdS technical departments for fire protection and burglary protection were expanded. The merger of the three specialist insurance associations, Verband der Sachversicherer e. V. , HUK Association and German Transport Insurance Association for the Association of Damage Insurers e. V. (VDS) took place in 1995. In 1996 they joined the associations with the Association of Life Insurers with the Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft e. V. (GDV) together. In 1997, the technical departments of the former professional association were transferred to VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH , of which GDV is the sole shareholder. The association of property insurers no longer exists today, the VdS certificate is awarded solely by VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH and is now interpreted as “trust through security”.
The organization has been holding the VdS BrandSchutzTage in Cologne since 2012 .
With the publication of VdS 3473 on June 1, 2015, the starting signal was given for a series of guidelines on information security .
Certifications
The company tests and certifies components of loss prevention equipment or entire systems in its own laboratories. In addition to products from the civil security market, the installers and installers of hazard alarm systems, the systems and their components as well as security companies with emergency call control centers are certified.
A system may only call itself VdS-approved if all products and services involved have been tested and approved with one another.
These certifications are a. issued on locks , fire alarms , alarm systems and their components. For example, a battery for an emergency power supply of the alarm system can have the certification number VdS G193046 with the note These batteries are officially approved by VdS for use in alarm systems. VdS states that the product-specific requirements are usually higher than those of the technical regulations of DIN, EN or ISO. Usually, a VdS approval always also covers the EN requirements - and often also upcoming standard requirements.
Around 100 VdS-approved installers for hazard detection technology, recognized in accordance with the VdS 3403 guidelines, also received their DIN EN 16763 certification immediately when the EU standard came into force in April 2017. VdS was the first institute worldwide that was able to present its recognized partners with certificates in accordance with the new EU standard.
There are insurance companies that set VdS certifications as the benchmark for premium discounts.
VdS certificate
According to the WIK-Sicherheits-Enquete 2015 (12th Security-Enquête of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Sicherheit in der Wirtschaft (ASW) and the trade journal WIK), the VdS seal of approval is the most important quality indicator for those responsible for security when purchasing security technology and security services. The study was discontinued after the sale of WIK magazine in 2016.
VdS concept
VdS follows the systematic of an integrated security approach:
- Formulation of appropriate requirements for the desired level of protection through VdS guidelines. The VdS guidelines are accepted and applied by industry and the insurance industry. Publications are available for download, including the award-winning guidelines for cyber security, especially for small and medium-sized companies.
- Formulation of requirements as well as the testing and certification of products
- Certification of processes in companies
- Certification of companies and specialists (including the planners and installers of the security systems)
- Initial acceptance and revisions of protective systems
- Qualification of safety officers and functions around safety through education
