Veļu māte
Veļu māte ( Lat . "Mother of the Dead") is in Latvian mythology the ruler over the realm of the dead wrapped in a white woolen cloth. When a person dies, she waits for him in the cemetery and receives him with a feast and assigns him a place. Sometimes she merges with the earth goddess Zemes māte . Other forms and names of the goddess of the dead are Nāves māte " mother of death", Kapu māte "cemetery mother " or Smilšu māte "sand mother".
