Vegesack class

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The six minesweepers of the Vegesack class (321) of the German Navy were built at Amiot in Cherbourg in France as type Mercure (licensed buildings of the United States Navy Bluebird class ). As far as possible, they were made of non-magnetic material in order to make the boats largely insensitive to magnetic mines . For example, the boats had a wooden hull.

The units were put into service in 1959/60 and initially assigned to the 2nd minesweeping squadron as coastal minesweepers (KM). From 1963 to 1969 the boats were decommissioned and placed under the reserve flotilla on January 1, 1969. The boats were then handed over to Turkey by 1978 .
