Velada (shamanism)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A velada was a shamanic ritual of the Mazatecs in which psychoactive mushrooms were often consumed. It served to heal sick people. A female shaman and the patient had taken the mushrooms and obeyed the sacred words from the spirit world.

As the first person from western cultures, R. Gordon Wasson was allowed to take part in a Velada. The mushroom cult and the Veladas became famous primarily through Maria Sabina , a Mazatec shaman.
