Eliphius von Rampillon ( French St Elophe ; † perhaps October 16, 362) was a Christian deacon and martyr from Lorraine . He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church ; his feast day is October 16th.

Vita

The Acta Sanctorum of the Bollandists describe that Eliphius preached to pagans and Jews and converted them near what is now Saint-Élophe , which is named after him . Since he had not renounced his Christian faith despite being asked to do so, he was executed on the spot by beheading on behalf of the Roman emperor Julian ( Acta Sanctorum: by Julian personally). After his death he got up and went with his head in his hands to the previously designated burial site on a nearby hill:

“By the power of Christ the bloody corpse rose, took the severed head in both hands and, accompanied by angels singing praises, walked the thousand steps to the mountain that Eliphius had chosen for his tomb. There he sat down on a white stone that opened and hollowed itself out to the saint's resting place. Next to this place was the h. Eliphius buried and built a church of grace over his grave. "

Another source - the Martyrologium Romanum - also mentions Cologne as the location of Eliphius' execution . When Archbishop Brun of Cologne , who was also Duke of Lorraine, held a council there, the Bishop of Toul is said to have given him the martyr's body as a gift. In 959 the relics were transferred to the Groß St. Martin monastery in Cologne as part of a larger Bruns foundation .

Adoration

Eliphius is venerated as a patron saint in the churches of Saint-Éliphe in Rampillon as well as in Frenelle-la-Petite , Soulosse-sous-Saint-Élophe , Viviers-le-Gras and in other churches of the diocese of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges , in the church of Groß St. Martin he is the second patron next to St. Martin .
