Velkopopovický Kozel is a Czech beer brand . The beer is u. a. brewed in the Velké Popovice brewery.

Velkopopovický Kozel is one of the lager beers and is traditionally brewed as a light or dark Czech lager in the variants light ( Kozel Světlý ), dark ( Kozel Černý ) and premium ( Kozel Premium ).

The distinguishing mark of the beer is a humanoid billy goat walking with a bulging beer mug. This also gives the beer its name, because "kozel" means billy goat in Czech. The beer is mostly simply called Kozel . In German it is also known as the "Großpopowitzer billy goat".

Velké Popovice Brewery

The brewery was founded in 1871 under the name Großpopowitzer Brewery by the large entrepreneur Franz Ringhoffer II in Velké Popovice, southeast of Prague. The first beer was brewed three years later. In 1875 the brewery was already delivering 18,000 hectoliters of beer. In 1945 the company was nationalized and shortly thereafter merged with others in the Středočeské pivovary group ( Central Bohemian Breweries ). In 1991 the brewery regained its independence and was converted into a stock corporation in 1992. In 1995 the Radegast AG brewery acquired the majority of shares in the company. Radegast merged with Plzeňský Prazdroj in 1999 .

Today the Velké Popovice Brewery is one of the three breweries owned by Plzeňský Prazdroj as (the manufacturer of the Pilsner Urquell ) and is part of the international Asahi Beer group .
