Production is Saaz hops from the traditional production areas in Northern Bohemia used. The brand name refers to the place of origin Pilsen. The brand has been part of the Asahi Beer brewery group since 2017 .

history

Due to the poor quality of beer in Pilsen at the beginning of the 19th century, the citizens with the right to brew beer decided to build a new brewery , the "Bürgerliche Brauhaus", in order to create the technical conditions for the production of a more modern bottom-fermented beer . In the spring of 1842, the Pilsen master builder Martin Stelzer appointed the Bavarian Josef Groll as the first master brewer . The civil brewery was constantly expanded in the following years and in 1913/1914 the annual production exceeded one million hectoliters for the first time. In 1898 the trademark Pilsner Urquell was registered.

Between 1999 and 2016, Pilsner Urquell was part of the South African Breweries plc group (since 2002: SABMiller ). In December 2016, the Japanese brewery group Asahi Beer took over the company. Pilsner Urquell is the main brand of Plzeňský Prazdroj a. s.

Pilsner Urquell was also brewed in Tychy , Poland, between 2002 and 2011 , where the Pilsner Urquell brand was first produced outside of the Czech Republic. After the expansion of the brewery in Pilsen, production in Poland was stopped. In December 2017, the brand's ten-year production in Kaluga , which was manufactured there for the Russian market, ended. Since then, beer for over 50 countries has been brewed exclusively in Pilsen again.

In 2017 Pilsner Urquell joined the Japanese brewery group Asahi Beer.

particularities

Except in barrels, the beer is delivered in green bottles. In contrast to the Pils varieties brewed in Germany , which usually have an alcohol content of 4.8% to 5.0%, the Pilsner Urquell has a lower alcohol content of 4.4%.
