history
The first written mention of the village belonging to the Vyšehrad Gau was in 1332 as Adamovice . At that time the place was already a parish village. The names Adamovy Popovice and Duchovní Popovice are also mentioned . Since 1350 the church and parish belonged to the íčany deanery . The Popovice family, traceable since the middle of the 14th century, held the patronage of the church. Around 1400 the village fell to King Wenceslaus . During the Hussite Wars , the Hussites established a camp on September 29, 1419 on the Na Křížkách square west of the village. On May 20, 1420 Jan Žižka moved to Prague via the Křížka camp . In November 1420 the Hussites destroyed the fortress in Popovice.
Subsequently, the owners changed frequently. Jiří Krejštan von Krejštejn had a new fortress built in 1560. Brewing justice is said to have been granted during this time. Later the village belonged to the families Hyserle von Chodov and Moschauer von Waldau. The population lived on agriculture, which was not very productive in the hilly area. After the abolition of patrimonial Popovice formed a municipality in the Karlín district from 1850. The municipality name Velke Popovice has been used since 1870 . In 1876 the parish came to the Královské Vinohrady district .
In 1870 the entrepreneur Franz Ringhoffer II , who was ennobled as Baron Ringhoffer shortly before his death in 1873, bought the manorial property in Velké Popovice and had a brewery built. In 1874 the Velkopopovický pivovar produced the first beer. Franz von Ringhoffer , who after his father's death ran the company together with his brother Emanuel (1848–1923), had the brewery expanded and a distillery built until 1875 . As a result of the companies, the village also grew. In 1885 it still consisted of 29 houses and in 1907 there were already 45. In 1912, the eastern village of Toditz was merged with Gross Popowitz. In 1921 the community was assigned to the Okres Jílové. By 1923 the number of residential buildings had risen to 192. The Ringhoffer family founded a brick factory in Brtnice.
After the Second World War, the property of the Ringhoffer family was nationalized. Since 1946 the community belonged to Okres Říčany and since 1961 to Okres Praha-východ.
