The Velodrom Mainz was a cycling track in the Upper Town of Mainz .

location

The cycling track was east of Fichteplatz , across Pariser Strasse , where today's water playground paddling pool is located. This paddling pool and the piece of lawn to the east on the other side of the neighboring colonnade roughly describe the interior space at that time. The steep western curve of the actual racecourse is still recognizable today as a semicircular embankment.

history

A bicycle club was founded in Mainz in 1883 . After it was re-established in 1889 as the Mainz Bicycle Club Moguntia and later as the Mainz Cycling Club in 1889 , the latter organized a lottery for the construction of a velodrome valued at around 30,000 marks, which was built that same year. Until 1910, the 1. FSV Mainz 05 also used this cycling track at major games instead of the former sports field at Gautor . In 1920 the Verein der Sportfreunde Mainz was founded with the Velodrome as a home competition venue. In 1928 the cycling track had to be abandoned because of a neighboring development area and was not rebuilt.Velodrom Mainz 1909

Events

In September 1922 the Verein der Sportfreunde Mainz organized so-called International Olympic Competitions , a cycling race initiated by Georg Drescher , a businessman and versatile athlete as well as an amateur European champion in 100 km cycling and German champion in "one-armed" weightlifting. The poster at the time shows that the interior of the cycling track was designed as a sports field.

Todays use

The western part of the velodrome from today's perspective. In the semicircle around the paddling pool, the steep curves of the Velodrome can clearly be seen as a grass slope. A small café with an outdoor terrace was operated on the site until 2010. In the 1980s and 1990s, when there was severe frost, the adjacent piece of lawn (the former eastern interior of the Velodrome) was flooded to create a natural ice rink.
