Velte (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Velte was a French measure of liquids, especially wine and brandy . Despite the introduction of the metric system, this measure could continue to be used as an exception. It was also known as the quarter .

1 Velte had 7.61 liters, but rounded it was used at 7.6 liters in practice. Thus a barrique had 228 liters.

The rule was: A barrel, the tonneau , had 4 barriques, which corresponded to 40 veltes to 8 pintes. The Velte was also equated to 2 English wine gallons . In Hamburg the Velte was also called a quarter in the wine and spirits trade, but that was five percent smaller than the French measure. The smallest "drink measure" in France , the Roquille , was 1/256 Velte (Verge). 1 Roquille was given as 0.029 liters.

In Russia , the Velte, also known as the quarter, had 6 Kruschka . 10 Kruschka corresponded to 1 Wedro (bucket).
