The Venice Fountain is a fountain in the city of Zurich . It was erected in 1980 at the intersection of Lavaterstrasse / General Wille-Strasse near the FIFA Museum .

Zurich and Venice maintained trade relations in the 15th century . At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War , Zurich concluded an alliance with the Republic of Venice to buy Italian weapons. The Habsburgs wanted to keep both Zurich and Venice away from the Bündner passes .

Commemoration of the Alliance

To commemorate the alliance Sold in Zurich in 1886 a road in was Venedigstrasse renamed. In the 18th century, merchants from Zurich founded the Società di San Marco company . She entertained Venetian guests in the Weiherschlösschen. The Weiherschlösschen was demolished in 1925.

Fountain

A lion figure made of Istrian limestone and a fountain with the coat of arms of Venice were handed over to the city of Zurich by the Venetian Minister for Tourism in May 1980. These are intended to serve as a reminder of both the old trade relations between the two cities and the Società di San Marco .

The fountain was given fountain number 1027 by the city of Zurich.
