The FIFA World Football Museum is a museum in Zurich dedicated to the history and development of international football .

history

The museum, which opened in February 2016, is housed on the lower floors of the ten-story Haus zur Enge in Zurich's Enge district opposite Zurich Enge train station . The building by Werner Stücheli from the 1970s was renovated between 2009 and 2015 and partially redesigned so that the basement floors can be used as a museum. The exhibition extends over a total area of around 3000 square meters. A freely accessible library on the first floor contains more than 7,500 publications dealing with the football phenomenon. The museum also has a restaurant with a terrace, a shop and a seminar area. The upper floors of the building are used as apartments and offices.

Although the museum is located in Switzerland, the orientation is global. The location was chosen because Switzerland is one of the founding members of FIFA and Zurich is home to the headquarters of FIFA.

Collection and exhibition

The museum shows more than 1000 objects from the world of international football. Memorabilia of every previous men's and women's soccer world championship are on display , including a famous tobacco pipe from the Italian world champion coach Enzo Bearzot , a tracksuit from Pelé , the original jerseys from Diego Maradona ( 1986 World Cup ) and Zinédine Zidane ( 1998 World Cup ) as well Rudi Völler's shoes from 1986. The most famous exhibits in the museum are the original men's and women's FIFA World Cup trophies . In the rainbow , a round glass showcase, the original jerseys of the FIFA member associations sorted by color are on display, currently 211 (as of May 2018).

The topic of football is conveyed through various interactive hands-on stations, including a walk-in pinball , the world's largest football pinball machine. In addition to participatory exhibits, 500 videos can be seen. The audio and sound installation Visions of Football shows soccer scenes and historical moments on an eight meter high LED surface. An eight-minute film with original scenes from the World Cup finals will be shown in a 180-degree cinema. Since July 16, 2020, there has been a new eFootball area in the permanent exhibition, which is dedicated to the phenomenon of console games , eSports and especially the FIFA series .

Events

The museum regularly organizes events on the subject of football, to which well-known personalities from the football world are often invited. In addition to public tours, the museum's cultural program includes series of events such as the kick-off discussion , the football cinema , book presentations and a football quiz . Every year the museum takes part in the Long Night of Museums in Zurich.

reception

The museum has an average of around 11,000 visitors per month.

As a private adventure world in which the company FIFA has invested 30 million francs, the museum polarizes. Critical voices would have liked the exhibition to focus more on its own eventful history or to deal with the allegations of corruption associated with FIFA.

The museum experience itself is largely received positively, with praise above all for the interactive presentation and the appeal to all the senses during a tour of the exhibition.

In 2017 the museum was nominated for the German Design Award in the Excellent Communications Design Fair category.
