The Association of Bavarian Amateur Theaters eV with an office in Rosenheim was founded in 1923 under the name "Bavarian Association of Folk Performing Arts - Cultural Association for Folk Art and Popular Education - Association of Bavarian Theater Associations eV". In 1959 it was reconstituted and renamed "Volksspielkunst-Verband Bayern eV". Association days have been held every two years since 1961 and every four years since 1983. The association grew continuously from 79 member theaters (1975) through 101 (1977), 127 (1979), 163 (1981), 196 (1983), 254 (1987), 330 (1991), 410 (1995), 449 (1998) on 570 stages in 2004. The association currently looks after and represents 587 amateur and amateur stages in three district groups - Upper Bavaria (with Lower Bavaria and parts of Upper Palatinate), Swabia and Northern Bavaria (Franconia with northern Upper Palatinate) - and is thus the largest regional association in the federal government Deutscher Amateurtheater eV The name of the association was changed in 1995.

The association is financially supported by the Free State of Bavaria. Together with the contributions staggered according to stage members, the following services can be passed on to the members:

  • Education and training for players, directors, technicians and make-up artists;
  • Specialist seminars on association and tax law issues as well as management and public relations;
  • Insurance coverage;
  • own specialist literature;
  • Free subscription to the association magazine " Bayerischer Theaterspiegel ", which appears three times a year (since 1985)
  • Subsidies for stage equipment and game encounters at home and abroad.
