It emerged from the dance and entertainment music association TUMV Zurich-Central Switzerland , which was founded in 1958 and to which many well-known folk musicians belonged at the time. The regional and cantonal associations were founded in 1976.

When it was founded, folk music was a stepchild of national radio and television, with poor airtime. With the newly founded association, the aim was to create an institution for the whole of Switzerland that would be able to determine the interests of Swiss folk music, especially in relation to radio and television. With a broad collection of signatures one could get popular folk music broadcasts.
