Eccentric connector: housing and bolt

The connecting fitting or carcass connector is a fitting used in furniture construction to releasably assemble larger pieces of furniture. They enable easier packaging, transport and assembly.

Connector types

Connector types include one-piece connector screws, screw connections with cross bolts, trapezoidal connectors and eccentric connectors. They differ in terms of visibility from the inside or outside in the furniture, the additional use of additional connecting elements such as dowels , and the effort required in production.

Eccentric connector

They consist of a cylindrical housing called an eccentric , which is provided with a cross recess or a hexagon socket on the face, and a bolt with a screw end and a mushroom-shaped head.

The size of the two parts of the fitting is matched to one another. The cylindrical part takes on the function of a claw that grips the mushroom-shaped end of the bolt and pulls it towards itself. The claw is designed as a helical radial slot. The gripping movement takes place by turning the cylindrical part by means of a screwdriver or Allen key at the exposed, flat end of the housing.

preparation

The two boards to be connected must be prepared with holes. For each eccentric connector, two holes are required in one board and one hole in the other.

The diameter of the first hole is chosen so that the housing fits in and can be rotated. It leads into the board at right angles. The distance to the end of the board is fixed and depends on the length of the bolt. A Forstner bit is suitable as a drill for this . A second, smaller hole forms a cavity between the first hole and the adjacent board end. It therefore leads parallel to the board surface from the board edge to the first, larger hole. The holes meet at right angles within the board and thus form a T-shaped cavity.

A hole is required in the second board, which in the assembled state results in the continuation of the cavity of the second smaller hole in the first board. Since the boards are at right angles to each other in the assembled state, this hole leads at right angles into the second board.

assembly

The bolt is screwed into the hole in the second board with its thread. The case is inserted into the larger hole on the first board.

When joining the two boards, they are positioned so that the bolt fastened in the second board is inserted into the smaller hole of the first board. If the bolt reaches the housing through the smaller hole, it is turned with the appropriate tool. The claw catches the bolt and both boards are pulled together tightly.

Additional stability

In order to give the construction more stability, in addition to the connection fitting, another connection is made using one or more wooden dowels.

Flat dowel connector

Detachable flat dowel connectors are thicker flat dowels made of plastic with internal connection mechanics. They are embedded with further developed flat dowel milling machines . In addition, a hole is required for locking.
