The group mine Pörtingsiepen / Carl Funke was a coal - mine in Essen .

It was created in 1967 through the merger of the Carl Funke and United Pörtingsiepen collieries of Mannesmann AG . The mine field extended north and south of the Baldeneysee under the present-day Essen districts of Heisingen , Heidhausen and Fischlaken and extended east to Dahlhausen .

It included the conveyor and Seilfahrt pits Carl spark 1/2 and United Pörtingsiepen 2, as well as the rope drive - and weather pits Carl spark 3 (formerly Prince Frederick ), Carl Funke 4, Carl spark 5 (formerly Altendorf 2 ), Carl spark 6 (formerly Dahlhauser Tiefbau 2 ), Gottfried Wilhelm 1 and 2 and Pörtingsiepen 3. Furthermore, a briquette factory was operated on Carl Funke 1/2 and on Pörtingsiepen.

The production of the composite mine amounted to 1.2 million tons of anthracite coal annually .

In 1968 the mine was taken over by Ruhrkohle AG and assigned to Bergbau AG Essen .

The Mannesmann AG had planned to secure their long-term survival through the network of mines. However, the overall adjustment plan of Ruhrkohle AG required the shutdown of all smaller anthracite extraction systems to concentrate on the high-performance Niederberg anthracite . This should also compensate for the tense sales situation for house branded products.

It was therefore decided to close the Pörtingsiepen / Carl Funke composite mine for the 1972/1973 financial year.

In 1972 the eastern field was abandoned (the mining and briquette factory in Pörtingsiepen were closed on December 30, 1972). On April 30, 1973, the last shift was driven on the composite mine. The Carl Funke briquette factory continued to produce until March 30, 1975 using stored fine coal from the Niederberg colliery.

The whereabouts and current condition of the pits can be seen under the respective articles.
