Verecundus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Verecundus († 552 in Chalcedon ) was bishop in the Roman province of Byzacena in Africa.

He also represented this province at the Second Council of Constantinople . He took the side of Pope Vigilius during the three-chapter dispute . Shortly afterwards, in 552, Verecundus died in Chalcedon.

He is considered - today in doubt - as the author of documents about the Council of Chalcedon : Excerptiones de gestis Chalcedonensis Concilii . The penitential poem De satisfactione poenitentiae in 212 hexameters and nine commentaries on the cantica of the Old Testament are certainly from him .

In the Catholic Church Verecundus (Latin: the considerate) is venerated as a saint . His feast day is October 22nd.
