The Association of German Sugar Technicians (VDZ), founded in 1891, is the largest scientific and technical organization for sugar technologists in Europe with around 600 members . More than 15% of the members live outside Germany.

history

At the suggestion of the director of the institute for the sugar industry in Berlin, Alexander Herzfeld, the "Association of academically trained sugar technicians" was founded in 1891. The next year Hermann Claassen was elected chairman; under his direction the name was changed to the current name. Since the 400 or so sugar factories that existed in Germany at the time of its founding mostly worked far apart, branch associations were established in different parts of the country from 1894 onwards. Prior to World War I , there were ten branches, including an international branch with members from all over Europe and overseas. At that time, important tasks of the association also included job placement and support for members in emergencies. In 1948 the association was re-established after the Second World War . He is a member of the German Association of Technical and Scientific Associations .

Purpose of the association and offers

The purpose of the association is to promote technical, scientific and practical work by bringing together scientifically trained employees in and for the sugar industry , exclusively and directly on a non-profit basis. The association promotes and maintains the exchange of information and opinions among all those at home and abroad who are active in the field of sugar technology and sugar technology and who are interested in sugar technology and sugar technology. The association has endeavored to establish and define uniform, technically and scientifically applicable terms not only in the German language, but also in a further 12 languages ​​in cooperation with foreign members.

The association provides information about new developments in sugar technology and industry and further training and education in professions in this area through participation in the association's meetings and through contacts with professional colleagues in Europe. The association also supports submitted or published scientific studies by its members in the field of sugar chemistry and technology by suspending cash prizes, which are reviewed annually by a technical committee. This is done by the Committee for Research and Examination of Prize Work.

Club organization and membership

There are three branches: North, Middle, and South. The business of the association is managed by the board of directors, which is composed of the chairman, the chairmen of the three branch associations - North branch, Central branch and South branch, the managing director, the assessor of the supplier industry and the foreign board member.

The annual general meeting takes place in May in the week before Ascension Day. In Europe, the general assembly of the Association of German Sugar Technicians is the most important annual sugar conference in the technical field. The general assemblies of the branch associations take place in the spring of each year in the three regions.

Membership is personal; any scientifically trained employee who is employed in or for the sugar industry can become a full member of the association.

International Relations

The VDZ is internationally positioned and has maintained relationships with other sugar technology organizations for many years, for example with those in the USA and Canada. The association is also open to other European countries and cooperates with other technical and scientific organizations such as the STC the VDI . The VDZ is one of the founding members of the ESST ( European Society for Sugar Technology ) founded in 2007 , a successor organization to the CITS ( Commission Internationale Technique du Sucre ) founded in 1949 ; Almost all European sugar producers as well as most associations of the sugar industry worldwide are united in this association. Together with the ESST, the VDZ has organized the ESST Conference every two years since 2009 .
