Félix Buhot , from Loÿs Delteil, 1898.

Life

He is considered one of the innovators of etching in France in the 19th century with Felix Bracquemond and Charles Jacque . He used various, including experimental, techniques in his prints (in addition to etching, aquatint , drypoint and modern processes such as photomechanical reproduction) and was known for his marges symphoniques , in which he built detailed views into his prints, inspired by the edge details of medieval manuscripts. Many of his prints depict Paris and especially the neighborhood of his apartment on Boulevard de Clichy. Other popular motifs were scenes by the sea and he also published depictions of scenes from London. Characteristics were often representations of the effects of the weather. Buhot was very successful in his day and exhibited regularly in Paris salons from 1875 to 1886.

He illustrated many of the books by Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly .

In 1888 he had an exhibition in New York City organized by the art dealer Frederick Keppel.

He signed with FB (also inverted) and also with an owl.
