Auguste Joseph Bracquemond , called Félix Bracquemond (born May 22, 1833 in Paris , † October 29, 1914 in Sèvres ) was a French painter , graphic artist and porcelain painter . With his new methods of etching , the artist , who is known for numerous Impressionist painters , encouraged Édouard Manet , Edgar Degas and Camille Pissarro to use this technique.

life and work

Bracquemond first received training as a lithographer . At the same time he took drawing lessons and later received lessons from Joseph Guichard, a student of Ingres and Delacroix .

In 1852 he exhibited a portrait for the first time at the Paris Salon and attracted attention. In 1863, however, one of his etchings was rejected by the jury of this official French art exhibition. Together with other painters who would later establish Impressionism, he instead showed this work at the Salon des Refusés , where the rejected artists on the orders of Napoléon III. were given the opportunity to present their work to a wider public. His friend Manet, Bracquemond, Fantin-Latour , Alphonse Legros , Johan Barthold Jongkind and Augustin Théodule Ribot founded the Societé des Aquafortistes de Paris in 1862 , an artist group to promote etching . Since August 1869 Bracquemond was with the impressionist painter Marie Bracquemond , born. Quivoron-Pasquiou, married. The artist worked as a porcelain painter for the Manufacture de porcelaine de Sèvres around 1870 . The Rousseau service was produced in France for 80 years. He also accepted the post of director of the Paris studio of the Haviland company ( Limoges ).

Bracquemond's recognition as an independent artist grew in the decades that followed. In 1900 he received the Grand Prix for his impressionistic graphics. He had already exerted influence on the artists of his time. He played an important role in the renewal of the technique of French etching and adapted this art form to the contemporary understanding of art. With this he worked on Manet, Charles Meryon and Corot . There was also a close relationship with Degas and some of his Impressionist friends such as Gauguin and Pissarro. His book on drawing and color, published in 1885, was important to Vincent van Gogh . Bracquemond was also one of the first to discover the Japanese color woodblock print .
