The association for the maintenance and furnishing of the Essen Minster (Münsterbauverein e.V.) is a non-profit , non- denominational association , which, contrary to its association name, not only houses the Essen Minster , today's Essen Cathedral, but the entire cathedral island with the cathedral, atrium, and worshiping church of St. Johann Baptist , Kreuzgang, Domplatz and Domschatzkammer supports and promotes not only preservation and decoration but also research into their history.

history

The Essen Minster was destroyed in the Second World War. The first mayor of Essen after the Second World War, the communist Heinz Renner , called in 1946 to rebuild the cathedral for the third time. The Münsterbauverein was then founded on November 18, 1947. In 1948 the first edition of the association magazine Das Münster am Hellweg appeared , which is now published annually and in which important articles appear on the history of the cathedral, the cathedral island and the Essen women's monastery. The publication is archived in numerous libraries between Aurich and Freiburg, the exact locations can be found using a ZDB-OPAC query.

The association, usually only briefly called Münsterbauverein, was able to decisively support the reconstruction of the Essen Minster, which was completed in 1957, in order to be able to devote itself to maintaining and furnishing it. The Münsterbauverein sponsored the glazing of the minster with windows by important artists, the Altfrid monument on the forecourt and the bronze doors to the atrium, the altar in the west or Adveniats crypt, the redesign of the cathedral courtyard, roof coverings and the restoration of treasures. The Münsterbauverein sponsored meetings of the Essen working group to research women's pencils and granted printing subsidies for the conference proceedings, as well as for several dissertations and research work.

household

The bulk of the revenue comes from government lotteries. In addition, the association is networked with commercial enterprises in Essen that support individual projects with donations. Further income are the membership fees.
